Inspire: A Teenage Retreat (school years 7-9)

10th - 12th February 2017 @ Worth Abbey Benedictine Monastery, Sussex

This February there was another retreat at Worth Abbey for young people in school years 7-9. INSPIRE is part of the youth retreat programme at The Open Cloister, which has been running successfully for a number of years. The retreats are run by an experienced team, with the support of the monastic community at Worth, and the Diocese. They give young people a brilliant chance to meet other young Catholics and to explore their faith in the beautiful atmosphere of Worth Abbey. There were also games, sports, social activities and much more.

Advent Walk for Young Adults

On Saturday 10th December 2016, The Wellspring Community hosted our annual Advent walk, an opportunity to journey deeper into the meaning of the season. We spent the day walking in the Sussex countryside, punctuated with times of silence, stillness and Advent reflections which helped us to prepare for the coming of Christ. We ended our mini pilgrimage with food, games, mulled wine and carols back at our house on Elm Grove

This event was part of a weekend of Advent fun at the Wellspring Community. The following day the Deep Waters choir led music at Sunday Mass and a number of us went carol singing in Moulsecoomb in the afternoon, after having lunch together.

Overflow: Advent Childrens Activities Day (age 7-11)

Sunday 4th December 2016 @ St Joseph's Church Hall, Milton Road, Brighton

We spent the afternoon preparing the way for Christmas with an assortment of fun activities, drama, music, crafts, prayer and games. The afternoon began straight after the 11.30am Mass, with lunch provided. Family members then joined us at 4.15pm for refreshments and a performance from the children.

The Journey: A Teenage Retreat for Advent (age 11-14)

2nd - 4th December 2016 @ Worth Abbey Benedictine Monastery, Sussex

We explored what Christmas is really all about! Like the wise men journeyed to meet Jesus after his birth, this advent each of us can make our own journey to meet Him. Over the weekend we though about what Christmas really means for us! This retreat was an invitation to put aside the Christmas lists and to go back to basics. It was a weekend of fun and games, prayer, arts and crafts and much more!

The Dawn from On High - Advent Retreat for Young Adults Retreat (18-35)

25th - 27th November 2016 @ Worth Abbey Benedictine Monastery, Sussex

This retreat was an opportunity to enter more deeply into the themes of Advent and to build community and encounter Christ through one another. Mince pies and Mulled Wine was also provided!

Exploring Religious Life - Afternoon for Young Adults

2nd October 2016 @ St Joseph's Church Hall, Milton Road, Brighton

We were very lucky to have two Benedictine Nuns from Lithuania join us for this afternoon exploring religious life. After going to the 11.30 Mass at St. Josephs, we hosted our usual Sunday lunch for young adults. Between lunch and pudding the sisters shared their vocation journeys and kindly offered to answer some of our questions. It was a lovely, relaxed afternoon and a wonderful opportunity to hear their experience of religious life and have some of those burning questions answered!

Summer Retreat for Young Adults (18-35)

24th – 28th August 2016 @ Worth Abbey Benedictine Monastery, Sussex

A four day retreat for young adults at Worth Abbey. The retreat was structured around participation in the monastic rhythm of prayer, daily Mass, and space for reflection in the beautiful surroundings of Worth Abbey. With talks from monks of Worth Abbey and members of The Wellspring Community, prayer & reflection space, Mass and Divine Office, friendship & enjoying the summer together!

Young Adults Trip to Taize

18th June - 27th June 2016

We took a group of young adults to experience a week of prayer, friendship and formation at Taizé, an ecumenical Christian community of brothers in France, together with hundreds of young Christians from around the world. We spent the week living in community and experiencing prayer, formation and service. The week offered the opportunity for deeper prayer and growth in the spiritual journey as well as time to build deeper friendships and share in community spirit.

Young Adults Easter Retreat @ Worth Abbey (18-35)

24th – 27th March 2016 @ Worth Abbey Benedictine Monastery, Sussex

A four day retreat to celebrate of the Death and Resurrection of Our Lord Jesus Christ.

The retreat was centred around participation in the Triduum liturgy from Maundy Thursday to Easter Sunday, with a programme of talks by monks, discussion, prayer & reflection, and fellowship.

Illuminate: Older Teenage Weekend (ages 14-18)

19th – 21st February 2016 @ Worth Abbey Benedictine Monastery, Sussex

Prayer, reflection, discussion, time for sport, creative activities, relaxing and making friends were all part of the weekend to provide a space for the teens to engage with their faith.

Dying and Rising in Christ - Retreat for Young Adults (18-35)

12th - 14th February 2016 @ Worth Abbey Benedictine Monastery, Sussex

A weekend retreat to prepare for Easter and to enter more deeply into the Lenten themes of the desert and renunciation.

The weekend offered the chance of encountering Christ in prayer through the Benedictine monastic tradition, with talks from the monks, space for reflection, participation in the rhythm of prayer with the monastic community (The Divine Office), Lectio Divina, walks in the beautiful Sussex countryside, and time for building community and friendships.

Four day retreat for young adults at Worth Abbey. Our theme for this year was Friendship with Christ, in Christ, and for Christ: the call to a deep communion with God - exploring ways to delve deeper into prayer and the spiritual life - and the call to a deep communion with each other and for others. We explored the vision of community and friendship found in Scripture, in the life of Jesus and his disciples, and in the monastic tradition, finding wisdom and practical tools for our own life of communion and discipleship.

The retreat was structured around participation in the monastic rhythm of prayer, daily Mass, and space for reflection in the beautiful surroundings of Worth Abbey. With talks from monks of Worth Abbey and members of The Wellspring Community.

The retreat was centred around participation in the Triduum liturgy from Maundy Thursday to Easter Sunday, with a programme of talks by monks, discussion, prayer & reflection, and fellowship.

Leading up to the retreat, we also led a ‘Cross Walk’ – a group of young adults and monks walked to Worth from Arundel, across the beautiful South Downs, carrying the Cross. Starting in Arundel on 29th March, arriving at Worth on 2nd April.

Four days for young adults (18-35) at Worth Abbey Benedictine monastery, which explored prayer and the spiritual life, being formed as disciples of Christ through the Benedictine tradition, and reflected on the call to the New Evangelization. The retreat was structured around participation in the monastic rhythm of prayer, daily Mass, and space for reflection in the beautiful surroundings of Worth Abbey. Young Adults Trip to Taize

26th July - 3rd August 2014

We took a group of young adults to visit the Taize community in France to spend a week alongside the brothers as well as hundreds of other young Christians from around the world. We spent the week living in community and experiencing prayer, formation and service. The week offered the opportunity for deeper prayer and growth in the spiritual journey as well as time to build deeper friendships and share in community spirit.

A day conference exploring friendship, knowledge and life in Christ the Word of God, with Fr John Farrell OP (Provincial of the Dominican Order, theologian and national speaker).

Talks, Q&A, Mass, Adoration and Reconciliation. Our conferences are donation-only events and booking is not necessary. This event was part of the Diocesan Jubilee.

The Mystery of Salvation – Entering the Drama of Holy Week

On Saturday 16th March 2013 we hosted a day with Fr John Farrell OP – Provincial of the Dominican Order, Theologian & National Speaker.

This day explored:
Part 1: The Easter Triduum – from Maundy Thursday to Easter Sunday: one liturgy, one spiritual act.
Part 2: "The Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you" (Rom 8.11) - the baptismal way of living: daily dying to self and being raised to life in the Spirit.

Desert Spirituality

On Saturday 23rd February 2013 we welcomed Fr Luke Jolly, Benedictine monk of Worth Abbey, to explore the themes of the desert in Christian spirituality and the monastic tradition - vulnerability, trust, purity of heart, conversion, providence.
The day included talks as well as prayer, stillness and silence.
